Open to early participants: Equatorial Guinea - Rio Muni FWI Reprocessing
01 July 2025Sharper Imaging. Full Basin Coverage. Exploration-Ready.
Exploration in Equatorial Guinea has delivered multiple successes across the region, including the Zafiro, Asen/Aleng, and Ceiba/Okume fields. Yet, the Rio Muni basin remains largely underexplored, despite its excellent geological promise.
To address this, Geoex MCG, in partnership with Perceptum and the Ministry of Mines and Hydrocarbons (MMH), is launching a comprehensive reprocessing campaign covering over 9,600 km² in the Rio Muni basin.
This initiative will provide interpreters with modern data and an unparalleled insight into the prospectivity by utilising Full Waveform Inversion (FWI) workflows to significantly enhance the imaging quality.
By tying the L-1 and L-2 wells for velocity and depth control, the reprocessing will focus on key down-dip plays within the Miocene and Upper Cretaceous–Paleogene intervals, unlocking new opportunities for hydrocarbon discovery and development.

The Geology
Distal petroleum systems are becoming more popular exploration targets in recent years in the search for larger volumes. A key stage in delineating these prospects is to understand the tectonic history and potential deposition entry points for key reservoir and source sequences.
Multiple potential entry points are anticipated to provide the reservoirs throughout Equatorial Guinea, some of which are proven to occur offshore Sao Tome and Principe as per the Jaca well.
This reprocessing campaign is set to provide further clarity as to the location of these entry points and to also provide further information regarding potential source rock presence. Imaging will focus on high-resolution delineation of similar aged intervals to the aforementioned fields that could lead to further discoveries.
